Laurier Invitational - Swim Meet

So I ventured in to new territory today and shot my first swim meet.  It took a little while to get the settings right but after a bit it ended up being successful.

Here are some shots:

Chalk one up for The Net Camera

From the moment I pressed the button on my Pocketwizard Mini TT1 to trigger the camera and flashes I knew I had something special, and I did. I found out today that I won the first ever Pocketwizard picture contest!!!

For those that don't know, Pocketwizards are remote controls that can trigger wireless flashes or even a camera, in my case BOTH!

I entered what I would consider to be my best shot (EVER) in Early December and the announcement was just posted on the Pocketwizard website here: Pocketwizard Contest

I won't get overly technical about how the shot was created, however it did involve a Nikon D700 triggered remotely.

Here is what the judge Mark Wallace had to say about my image:
Overall winner: Photo #4 (hockey players). I loved the unusual point of view, the colors, the composition of the shot - every eye is on that puck! Even the people in the back ground are focused on the single point of action. The colors are rich, the wide angle lens gives us a sense of the space. We know the players are in a large arena but it's not a sold out game. Those details all add to the story told in this frame. The facial features of the players are captured perfectly. We see a look of determination on Player #2's face while at the same time we see wide eyed hope on the face of her teammate, and you can almost hear the opposing team shouting "nooooo!". This photo tells a complete story and that's why I chose it as the overall winner."

Mark is a commercial fashion photographer from Phoenix, Arizona and is the author of several Pocketwizard tutorials.  Check him out here:

Laurier University Women's Hockey

I posted the net shots from Friday nights games but I also wanted to share some of the non-net camera pictures from the game.

I absolutely loved this shot.  The Windsor player pushed her way through two defenders on her way to the puck.  While she didn't score it was a great play.

The Laurier player dug the puck out of the corner, then spotted her teammate waiting in the slot in front of the net.  The pass was perfect, but the goalie made a great save.  I like the fact that her head is up and she is looking for the pass.

The Laurier player here gets a penalty for tripping, even though she was carrying the puck down the ice and slammed the brakes on.  The defender got caught up and fell.  The fans in the stands were not pleased with that call in a tight game.

While there is no body checking in women's hockey, there is the odd "rub out".  Check out the faces on these two as the Windsor player tries to put the Laurier player in to the boards.

I hope you enjoy!

NET CAMERA MANIA!!!!

I was out to the Laurier Universities Women's hockey game last night and got a TON of great net camera shots.

A special shout out goes to Sigma lenses for their 10mm f2.8 Fisheye.  It was the first time using my new fisheye lens and it worked GREAT!!!  The lens is exactly as advertised.  Check out some of the better action shots from Friday January, 6, 2012.
